I am a photoshop CS3 beginner. Just took my first raw pictures and wanted to make some very specific adjustments. So I bought two books: A Scott Kelby recipe book and the CS3 book for dummies - total $70 investment. I did the step by step for dark circles under the eyes. Scott's picture had smooth even skin tones and was a simple fix. Mine on the other hand has very uneven tones and not just a shadow. No matter how much I played and tweeked the end result was it looked like horrible botched plastic surgery. What do I look for in a book - exactly what I bought. What do I need in a book - everything you mentioned!!!

My writing partner and I aimed at intermediate to advanced folks who need concept more than recipes: http://tinyurl.com/4c64t2

I also like Dan Margulis' approach, which is a mix of conversation with technical depth, and a few tricks sprinkled in here and there. For the most part, I can reverse engineer effects or processes that I like, so I tend to lean toward bigger concepts and discussions as opposed to step-by-step works. It's all just preference, though!

The primary thing that I look for is a book that doesn't simply replicate other information and turorials that can be simply found on the Internet or just puts the online Adbobe manuals in different words. I do like "recipie" style books such as Scott Kelby's last CS4 Down & Dirty - that is an awesome book.

I also like real indepth tomes such as Martin Evening's books - they offer real depth and insight into the products.
