That’s right, we are now in the final days of the January 2010 Photo Contest. It’s hard to believe that the first month of 2010 is almost over already and with it comes the end of our latest monthly photo contest.

That’s right! With the new year comes a new Photo Contest for you all!
For anyone new to the contests, basically all you have to do is head over to our January 2010 Photo Contest Flickr Group and submit up to 3 of your photos. At the beginning of February, I will select the winner.
So take the new camera you got for Christmas out of its box, install your brand new copy of Lightroom, process it using your new Photoshop plugins, and send in your shots today for your chance to win!

As the year comes to a close, so does another one of my Monthly Photo Contests. The Results Are In: November Camera Phone Photo Contest!
It’s that time once again when we celebrate the members of our digital photography community who have shared their photos as part of our monthly photo contest.
This month, I decided to do something a little different based on a suggestion from my friend, illustrator Eric Maruscak, and see what kind of entries we would get of shots taken with a camera phone. Unless you’re someone like Chase Jarvis, it can be a little tough to come up with a decent shot from your phone. That being said, though, each and every one of the entries into the November Photo Contest really stands up and takes a step beyond a typical camera phone snapshot.
So, They Think I Can Teach Photoshop!
That’s right! I received official word that I was selected as one of the Honorable Mention winners in the NAPP So, You Think You Can Teach Photoshop?! contest! And I would I like to take this opportunity to thank the judges for this honor and opportunity.
Though it would’ve been awesome to claim the top slot and have the opportunity to teach a live session at Photoshop World in March as well as on their podcasts, I am truly humbled that I am ranked along with some other very talented Photoshop instructors. (more…)
November Photo Contest Reminder
That’s right! We’re already over halfway through the month and the November Photo Contest only has a couple of weeks left!
Regulars will know that there is usually no theme for my monthly photo contests but this month I thought it would be fun to see what you could do with your camera phones (thanks to a suggestion from my friend, Illustrator Eric Maruscak). You can process the photos as much as you like, as always, but it should originate from a phone. (more…)
The Results Are In: October Photo Contest!
It’s that time once again to announce the winner of the latest Monthly Photo Contest!
As it is every month, I am both excited at the number of entries and daunted by the many excellent images submitted. I am also pretty stoked by this month’s prize. Photoshop Video Contest: Entry #3
This final entry into the So You Think You Can Teach Photoshop contest is one of my personal favorites.
From the first time I saw it I knew I had to figure out how to recreate it for myself. After doing some research, I only found two videos out there that showed how to create the effect. I feel that this is the best entry I have into the contest. I think the production values are good, the content is strong, the effect is unique and interesting, and the process I present is user-friendly and that it all came together quite nicely. (more…)
Light Blogging the Next Couple of Days
I’m into the final stages of my videos for the So You Think You Can Teach Photoshop?! contest and I’m spending all the time I can spare making sure they are right.
The first two are in and I’ll be working on the last one tonight. So, to that end, I will not be able to devote much time to new blog posts until Tuesday night for Wednesday’s posting.
Once the contest closes on Saturday, I will be sure to post the videos so you can see what I’ve been working on.
October Photo Contest Reminder & News
With less than two weeks left in October – I know, I can’t believe it myself! – that means the October Photo Contest is almost up!
Entries this month have a chance to win a 16×20 print of one of their photos sublimated on to a piece of aluminum by our friends over at IGT America – A $50 Value! I have one hanging in my house and it looks fantastic! You will definitely want to enter this one!
I’ve been in on the beta testing for a new iPhone App designed specifically for wedding photographers. I can’t say much about it until it is officially released but I will have a full review as soon as it is. All I’ll say is that it is very impressive and will be very useful for all of you wedding photogs out there. Just out of curiosity, how many wedding photographers do we have in the audience? How many of you are iPhone users? In the coming months, there may even be a copy of this mystery app as a contest prize! So let me know!

Monday Morning Updates
Last night marked the end of our silent auction to support Chris Stern’s Walk4Hearing efforts. In the end, with the help of some awesome photographers, an amazing printing donation via Mpix, and the generous support of those who bid on the prints, we were able to raise a hair under $900 to benefit the Walk4Hearing! Thank you all!
Even though the auction is over, if you would still like to help Chris out, you can donate directly through his donation page.
I have settled on my three videos for the NAPP contest. I’m not going to divulge them until after the deadline so I can be sure they aren’t copied. I’ve finished the opening graphics sequences for all three videos, I’ve outlined the workflow for each and I’m ready to start recording and editing in the next week. Who knows what the outcome of the contest will be with so many excellent trainers out there, but I know that I’ll be able to come up with some great tutorials for three very interesting effects that will provide you with options when you want to look at your subjects in a new way.

There are only 11 questions so it won’t take long. I know it’s pretty general but it’s only a starting point as I develop what could be a new series of workshops to help you get better at Photoshop. The Results Are In for the September Photo Contest!
Wow! Every time I open up a new monthly photo contest I am amazed at the quality of shots that are shared. Thank you all for making me work so hard at making my selections every month! You amaze me and, more importantly, inspire me to get out there and shoot!

Without further ado, this month’s winner is:
“pier 3 square” by M Greenbaum Photography
Marvin will be receiving a free item from my official Jason D. Moore Photography Apparel Store. Congratulations!
I was taken by this shot the first time I saw it. There are so many elements at work here that just come together and “make it” for me. First off, I like the square cropping. It makes it stand out and I like how it plays off of the repeating pattern of the supports for the pier. I like the play between contrasts here: cool vs. warm colors, solid vs. fluid, sharp focus vs. blur, angular vs. the organic nature of the clouds and surf. I like how the shot isn’t just of something pretty, it communicates something through the contrasts, through the fact that the structure is aged and weathered. It says something. Nicely done!

The October 2009 Photo Contest is now open! As always, you have until the 31st at midnight (Eastern) to submit up to 3 photos for the prize. And boy do we have a good one this month! Troy Breidenbach (the photographer who shot the football player image above) is the president of a company called IGT America that uses a really cool technology to “print” images onto metal to make signs, dry erase boards, etc.
Troy and one of his graphics guys are avid photographers and they thought it would be fun to try transferring their skills at making signs towards their own work, and the results are fantastic! The process is called “sublimation” and here’s what they do:
1.) we get your image electronically and make sure the color space matches our profile (and convert it if not)
2.) the image is printed on 64” ink jet printers with a special ink and paper
the paper allows the ink to be “transferred” to the metal later
3.) the paper is married to the metal and put through a heat and pressure cycle that turns the ink from a solid to a gas without becoming a liquid in between.
4.) because of the pressure the ink can only go into the specially coated metal where it is “locked” below the clear coat
5.) the metal is cooled quickly so the color stays fast
6.) the flat metal is stamped to round the corners and put the holes in
Troy was kind enough to send me a sample using one of my own images and I must say, the final piece is amazing! It has a great finish and a terrific feel! (I just have to figure out the best place to hang it!) I’ve heard of this process before using fabrics because we offer certain products at work using a sublimation process, but before Troy contacted me I’d never heard of it being used on metal for photos. It is a very unique way of displaying your photos.
So, long story short, the winner of the October contest will receive a free 16×20 sublimated piece of metal depicting one of their photos. So, be sure to enter your best work this month for your chance to win the awesome prize!

September Photo Contest Reminder
That’s right, September is quickly coming to a close and, along with it, so is my September Photo Contest!
I’ve already received 25 entries into this months contest but there is still time for you to submit your shots! And the Winner Is…
Over the summer, my buddy Rob Jones of Towner Jones Photography held a very cool contest asking his readers to submit a theme for a self-directed photo project that they would then go out and shoot a collection of images based n that theme.
Rob was so kind as to ask me to be on his panel of judges for the contest and, I must say, there were some awesome entries out there from some very talented and creative photographers. We scored each collection of images based on General Appeal, Creativity, and Relation to the Theme. It was a fun, though tough, time going through each of the galleries and rating the images.
In the end, the winning collection comes from photographer Keegan Morrison’s theme of “Bugs” (view the entire gallery). Keegan put together a fascinating selection of macro shots of insects and bugs of all kinds showing us the tremendous detail of these small, creatures. Congratulations!
Both runner’s up – Chris Stern and Rebecca Lund – each had excellent galleries as well and are to be congratulated on their work!
Nice work everyone! And a big “Thank You” to Rob for his invitation to be a part of this awesome project!

How’d They Do That?
As I prepare my entries for the So, You Think You Can Teach Photoshop?! contest I’ve got one concept nailed down and I’d like you’re help to decide the other two.
I’m not going to tell you what the first one is quite yet. I did a search on YouTube for it and only found two videos – a decent one in English and a short one in German – about the same technique so I think it will certainly stand out and it’s definitely a unique effect.
I’m looking for ideas for styles/concepts/techniques that are fresh, new, popular, and cutting edge that make you say to yourself “How’d they do that?!” If you’ve come across anything like that, send me an image of it or a link and I’ll check it out. Who knows? Maybe your suggestion will be a part of my entry into the contest!
