The Results Are In: December 2009 Photo Contest!

As the year comes to a close, so does another one of my Monthly Photo Contests. Before announcing the winner for the December Photo Contest, I’d like to take a moment to thank all of our contest sponsors over the past year including Westcott, Scott Kelby, Mpix, IGT America, onOne, Unified Color, Photoshop Cafe, What the Duck? and Kelby Training. Thank you for all of your generous support and for working with me to encourage our fellow photographers to grow with every shot.
I’d also like to thank everyone who has entered my contests this year. Whether you won a prize or not, I want you to know that I saw artistry in each and every shot and you are all more than capable of doing great things behind the lens. Keep it up!
And now, for our winner…
September Photo Contest Reminder
That’s right, September is quickly coming to a close and, along with it, so is my September Photo Contest!
I’ve already received 25 entries into this months contest but there is still time for you to submit your shots! The winner of this particular monthly photo contest will have their choice of either a Women’s Light T-Shirt, Light T-Shirt, Ringer T, Women’s T-Shirt, or White T-Shirt OR your choice of a stein, mug, large mug, or tote bag from my official Jason D. Moore Photography Apparel Store.
To enter, simply submit up to 3 photos to our Photo Contest Flickr Group by midnight (Eastern) on Wednesday September 30th.
If you’re not entering the contest but would still like to sport your very own Jason D. Moore Photography tee or drink your morning coffee out of an official Jason D. Moore Photography mug, stop on over to the store and get yours today!
Also, I received a sample in the mail the other day of what will be a prize for one of our upcoming contests, perhaps next month. I don’t want to give it away but it is something I had never really thought of before but have since seen similar concepts popping up all over. It’s very unique and the results are fantastic! A huge thanks to one of my readers, Troy B., for sharing this idea with me and donating the prize!
More on that one later. For now, enter the September Photo Contest!
Wonders of Life – Flickr Photo Contest
Want a chance to win a Canon T1i?
I was contacted recently about a photo contest sponsored by the LIFE Foundation – a non-profit that works to educate people about making smart decisions in order to safeguard their families’ financial futures. They don’t endorse any product or company, they only seek to help people make educated decisions to protect their loved ones.
The purpose of the competition is to get Americans thinking about life insurance and how it can help preserve life’s wondrous moments. Submit one digital photo that captures a wondrous moment in the life of your family—one that conveys true peace, joy and meaning.
Enter and you may be able to capture other wondrous moments with a new Canon T1i, 12.2-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera—the top prize in the Wonders of Life Photo Contest. The camera is an $800 value! Entering is easy. During September 2009, upload your best digital image to the “Wonders of Life” Group at the photo-sharing website Flickr.com.
In addition to the Grand Prize, a panel of judges will select five Runners-up, with each receiving a $150 gift card to Bestbuy.com. Winners will be announced on or about November 1, 2009. Winning photos will be featured on the LIFE website.
Send in your photos in by the end of the month for your chance to win!

Scott Kelby is donating a signed copy of “The Photoshop CS4 Book for Digital Photographers” for the winner.

What the Duck will be giving the winner a What the Duck Plush as well as a signed print of their favorite WTD Strip.
As I mentioned above, that is not all! The first runner-up will receive a full copy of the onOne Plug-In Suite 4.5 and $50 to spend at Mpix! Also, 2 additional runners-up will get $50 in Mpix services.

Post #950! And the BIG Photo Contest!
I like to celebrate even the small milestones in life. And so it is today with my 950th blog post. I never want to forget all of the readers out there and those who have taken the time to comment and contribute to the life of the blog over the years. And a very special thank you to everyone who has been such a huge support by linking back, talking me up, sponsoring, guest posting, participating in projects, and just being great Friends-of-the-Blog. It really means a lot and you all have helped make this little corner of the web what it is, whatever role you play.
Thank You!
950 is a nice round number, and certainly a laudable goal in its own right, but it means that the next big milestone is a really big one. One that can’t be passed by with a casual mention on a single day. So, it’s not going to be…

I am excited to announce today that between now and July 31st I am putting out a call for entries into my Biggest Photo Contest yet!
Here’s how it’s going to work:
- Collect 5 of your own images that depict each of the following (in any order):
- Aged, Worn, or Old
- Travel or a Journey

- Images can be processed or otherwise manipulated as much or as little as you deem necessary.
- Submit your images by July 31st to The BIG Photo Contest Flickr Group with a note in the title or description about which category each image falls into.
- This is an open contest. Anyone can enter.
- The images will be judged as a group based on:
- Overall Artistry
- Originality
- Composition
- How well each image fits the categories - The winner will be announced in Post #1,000 which is scheduled to appear in early-mid August.

Vote for Mike!
For those of you who might be going through some withdrawl now that American Idol is over – by the way, I think Adam was the better artist/performer but could see that Kris had the more mass appeal and marketability to the target audience of teenage girls, but I digress – our very own Photoshop & Photography Blogroll member, Mike Palmer, has been selected as a finalist in Washingtonian.com May Photo Contest - Congrats!
It is now up to the rest of us to select the winner. So head over to the contest page to cast your vote for Mike!
Want to enter a contest yourself? (Talk about a great segue, right?! Of course I just totally ruined the smoothness of it by saying that, didn’t I…) There is only a little over a week left in my May Photo Contest where you have a chance to win a FREE 1-Year Subscription to Kelby Online Training if you come out with the best photo. Enter by midnight on May 31st to be eligible!
And, just to add one more thing, in case you haven’t done so already, signup to attend – or even lead – a photowalk as part of Scott Kelby’s 2nd Annual Worldwide Photowalk this July 18th. I’m hosting the Cazenovia Photowalk as part of this amazing international photography event. As of this writing there are already 344 cities from around the world taking part. So signup and join the thousands of other photographers who will be coming together to celebrate our common passion for photography!

Ithaca Photowalk Images
I’d like to thank everyone who made it out for our Ithaca Photowalk this past Saturday! The weather was perfect for an afternoon in the Commons and the company was lively as we captured images of this cultural center.
Images are starting to make their way to our Ithaca Photowalk Flickr Group and I’ve put together a gallery of my favorite Ithca photos, so far – there is still a lot to go through.
I finally got to meet fellow blogger, Beau A.C. Harbin, and got to see one of my faithful readers again (Hi Margaret!). It’s always great to meet my readers and fellow bloggers face-to-face, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what they took away from the photowalk.
I know I’m a little biased, but I also love this shot that Kim took on the day.
We’re already in the early stages of planning our next photowalk coming up this summer. The official announcement and complete details will be making their way out to you in a few weeks but you will definitely want to join us for our next photo adventure.

Photo Review: Sangeeth V.S.
Today we welcome photo hobbyist Sangeeth V.S. for our latest photo review. First off, as always, some background on the image from the photographer:
I’m a photography hobbyist. My interest in photography grew after I started posting photos in Flickr… My camera is a P&S – Canon Powershot S2 IS… I had visualized such a sunset and I almost captured what I had in mind. But I’m not satisfied with the area around the sun. Not sure what it is but I somehow get the feeling that it’s not right. Or is it how the sun looks like?
Let’s start with the positives. I think the framing and overall composition shows attention to detail and everything holds together quite well. The horizon is on (or close to) the lower third line and the sun and center of the boat are on or close to the right-hand third line which helps give the image a nice balanced feel.
I’m always a big fan of sun rays, both in photographs and in reality and I think they really add something to an image. Here, they’re subtle but I think they work by introducing the “dynamic diagonals” that really contribute to the interest of a piece. They also serve to direct the viewers eye from the outside edges and the top down towards the sun and boat.
I also like the highlighted edges of the clouds and think that they, too, act as a guide for the viewer as they move through the image. They aren’t too distracting because they are a similar color to the rest of the sky but the highlights make them pop and tie things together nicely.
I think the overall color works for the shot and there is enough variation to keep it from looking too flat.
A couple of thoughts about how to improve the image. First off, with regards to the concerns about the area around the sun, it looks to me that it is either just how your camera captured the image or the result of your processing, or a little of both. The sun is pretty difficult to shoot in almost any situation because it is just this overwhelming light source that is difficult, if not impossible to tame when it’s in the frame. To fix the issue, I think a little cloning over the problem areas would work, but you’d want to make sure that you still keep those areas a little brighter – even as a gradient to blend it with the surrounding sky – so it doesn’t look too processed.
It’s a little thing, but I would probably clone out the dark cloud in the sky, the boats along the horizon, and the dark object along the bottom edge so the viewer isn’t taken away from the main subject.
The last thing I would suggest would be to lighten the water a tad so the boat is a little more noticeable. I know you’re going for a more silhouetted look, but you don’t want to lose the boat. But you don’t want to lose the effect either. You just need a tiny bit of adjustment to find that balance.
All in all, I like the image and there are a lot of really good things at work here. Thanks for the submission, Sangeeth!
If you would like to submit one of your photos for review, get all the information you need on our photo reviews post today!
The Results Are In! March Photo Contest!

Well, it’s that time again! Once again, the field of submissions was packed with some great images making my job pretty tough. One of the things that I really liked about the winning shot was not only the obvious quality, that you can see for yourself, but if you take a peek at the original – link provided in the description on Flickr – you will see just how far its come. Nice job!
So, without further ado, the winner of a free 8×10 print of one of my shots (a $50 value) is:

“Fierce – After” by goldenwreckedangle
Now, in no particular order, are some other images that really caught my attention and I felt that they deserve to be shared with you:
Thanks again to everyone who has submitted photos for the March contest! I hope you will all enter in April!
On that note, the April contest is now open! You may enter up to 3 shots anytime between now and April 30th for your chance to win:
-
Gray Westcott T-Shirt
-
Long Sleeve Adobe “Ps” Logo Tee
I’ll update the sizes later…
Check out our Photo Contest Page for complete rules. Make note: I have created a new Flickr Group just for April’s contest – it’s just easier to manage that way – so make sure you enter in the right group!
Good Luck!

Workflow Friday: Roger Madsen
This week we welcome another exceptional photographer to our Workflow Fridays series, Roger Madsen. I don’t recall where I first encountered Roger and his work but I’ve always thought there was something really compelling about it. I always appreciate it when there is more to a photo than the technical – framing, composition, color, tone, texture, etc. – and it actually tells a story, captures more than the moment, and draws you in and transports you to another place entirely. Much of Roger’s work makes me want to be there, and inspires me to be better, myself.
Thanks for sharing with us today, Roger!
One thing I often do when I arrive to a place that I want to photograph is to walk into a tourist shop and look at postcards. Not to just copy and get the same images myself but to be inspired and get ideas. The angle in which this image is shot is pretty common on postcards in Paris although on every postcard I saw it was shot at night when the tower is lit and with a completely black sky. I wanted to shoot a similar picture but at sunset with a more interesting sky and in HDR converted to black and white. Getting a more interesting sky is of course not something that you can just choose to get whenever you want to but as
you can see I was pretty lucky that day.
I will just describe what HDR is very briefly here if you’re not familiar with it. HDR stands for high dynamic range. Sometimes the dynamic range in the camera is not enough. You either get blown out highlights or completely black areas in your image. This is when HDR can be a solution. You shoot a couple of images with different exposure, some that have details in the shadows and some that have details in the highlights and then combine them to one high dynamic range image.
Here’s my step by step guide to how I post processed the image of the Eiffel Tower.
Step 1.
First step is to combine my different exposures in Photomatix. Photomatix is pretty much the standard software to use for HDR today but there is a new software out called HDR MAX that might be interesting to check out too. I haven’t tried it myself yet though. You can actually do HDR’s in Photoshop too but I don’t recommend even trying that. You will for sure get a headache.
I shot this image with seven different exposures but I only used three in Photomatix. That’s usually the way I do it. I set my camera to bracket 7 or sometimes even 9 shots and then I pick three different exposures from those that I think will work best. It also depends on the subject I’m photographing, how much dynamic range I actually need. Sometimes I use four or five images. It’s better to shoot to many exposures and end up using just a few than to shoot too few exposures and not having enough dynamic range. Here’s the three exposures I used for this image.
I don’t do any adjustments at all on my RAW images before I open them in Photomatix. I just open them just as I shot them straight from the hard drive on my computer. If I need to do any cropping on my image, which I didn’t in this case I also do that after I have combined my exposures in Photomatix.
Step 2.
I have now opened my three different exposures in Photomatix by hitting the generate HDR button and then choosing my three images. Now I have some settings to deal with before I can generate my HDR.
I shot this with a tripod so I will not check the align source images check-box because I know all my images are perfectly aligned to begin with. The number one rule when shooting HDR is to use a tripod so I never check this box.
The other check box, attempt to reduce ghosting artifacts is a bit more tricky. It should help you get a better result if you have something in your images that has moved during the exposures like trees that are moving because of the wind. If there is something that could have been moving between my exposures then I usually try different settings here to see which one works best. I probably did have some very small movements in the clouds in this image and I have tried all the different settings but I didn’t see any difference. So for the final image I choose to not have this box checked.
For this image that will be in black and white I don’t really care about the white balance and just choose as shot.
Now I hit ok and let Photomatix do its magic.
Step 3.
The tone mapping step. This is the hardest part. At least the hardest part to explain. There are so many settings here and I wonder if there is anyone that knows what every single one of them do. I just drag different sliders around until I have something that I’m satisfied with. One thing to be careful with though is the light smoothing setting. This is where it can go very wrong. I usually have this set to high or very high. Many people seem to like to have it set to low (at least if you search for HDR on Flickr) and that will give you some really creepy looking pictures with halos and all kinds of stuff. To get a pretty natural looking image set this to high or very high.
I always set the black and white point slider to zero. I feel more comfortable doing this with a levels adjustment in Photoshop after I’m done in Photomatix. Here are the settings I used for this image.
When I’m done with my settings I hit process and then I save the resulting image as a 16 bit TIFF. Now it’s time to play around in Photoshop!
Step 4.
This is the output image from Photomatix. I think the colors looks a bit strange but as I said before I knew from the beginning that I wanted it in black and white so I don’t put any effort into correcting that.
The first thing I did in Photoshop was to add a levels adjustment layer to lighten up the image a bit and also set the black and white point. To add a adjustment layer go into the Layers menu and then New adjustment layer. Here you will find all the different adjustment layers. The rest of this tutorial is all about adding different adjustment layers so I will just describe how to do that once here.
Step 5.
Then I converted the image to black & white by adding a black and white adjustment layer. I pretty much always use the black and white adjustment layer for conversions and I also 90% of the time use one of the standard preset (Red filter, yellow filter and so on). In this image I used the red filter preset. I at least start by going through the presets to get a good starting point and then if I think it’s needed, which I usually don’t, I will tweak it a little.
Step 6.
The levels and black and white adjustments has already added some contrast to the image but I wanted more so I added a curves adjustment layer with a s-curve.
Step 7.
To get a more metallic feel to the Eiffel Tower I added just a touch of split toning effect to the whole image with a color balance adjustment layer. Giving the highlights a warm tone and the shadows a cold tone.
That’s it! Any questions? I will keep an eye on the comments here for a while if you have any questions or just send me an email to the address you can find on my web page and I will be happy to answer your questions.
