onOne PhotoFrame 4
Awhile back I received a copy of PhotoFrame 4 as part of the Plug-ins Suite from onOne Software. I hadn’t had time to use it all that much but playing around with textures as I did last week really inspired me to take it for a spin.
Workshop Interest Inquiry
UPDATE: For tomorrow’s post I will include an actual survey with the questions below to make it a little easier to digest. In the meantime, please leave comments or send me an email to jason[at]jasondmoore[dot]com with your thoughts Thanks!
One of my readers from up here in the Northeast US contacted me over the weekend about whether or not I’ve considered leading a Photoshop Workshop and expressed his eagerness to attend if I set one up. And it got me to thinking.
I’ve led multimedia workshops before as part of my previous job, mainly for clients who had very little experience with Photoshop or PowerPoint or GoLive. Most of the attendees were newbies so the sessions were VERY basic to make sure everyone could follow along and get a feel for the software and general design concepts, and that sort of thing.
However, looking forward at the possibility of leading workshops in the future, I’d like to get some of your feedback to see what you’re looking for so I can develop something accordingly. Even if you are not in the Northeast US, please share your thoughts
My first impulse is to say that my target audience would be current Photoshop users who would call themselves experienced beginners – meaning they’re not entirely green but feel pretty comfortable with the software and want to learn more – up to intermediate users – those who have a good grasp of the basics but want to take it to the next level. Does that make sense?
My first question has to do with length. How long would an ideal workshop last for you? An evening? From 9am-5pm on a Saturday? Multiple days? Having been to Photoshop World before I know I could go for days soaking up Photoshop but I’m certain that not everyone has that longevity for such an intensive, in-depth course of study. So what would be your ideal?
What sort of content are you looking for? Photography? Photoshop? Lightroom? Concepts in visual storytelling? Take it one step further. If you’re interested in focusing on Photoshop, what areas would you like to know more about? What tools/techniques have you not quite figured out yet?
What is your ideal class size? Would you look for a more lecture/Q&A style workshop where the instructor would go step-by-step through techniques and explaining the tools/concepts used along the way while you watch? Or would you rather be in a situation where you had your laptop to work alongside the instructor – maybe with a smaller class size for some one-on-one time? Would you want a photowalk as part of the workshop? Maybe the day would go like this: have a session about the basics of composition and visual storytelling, then have the photowalk, then go through some post-processing workflows (perhaps with photos by the attendees) and then some processing time before reviews of photos shot that day?
What would you expect to have included in the fee beyond the tuition? A workbook? Your meal, if necessary? Or would you feel comfortable having the meal be “on your own”?
How far would you be willing to travel to attend? And where would you be coming from (so I could judge where your threshold is relative to here)?
And finally, with all of your responses in mind, what would you be willing to pay for an evening, day-long, weekend-long workshop? And how likely would you be to sign-up for one, if offered?
I know I hit you with a lot of questions right there, but I want to thank you in advance for responding!
Place Your Bids! Time is Running Out!
If you’ve been waiting to place your bids on one of the outstanding shots up for grabs as part of the Walk4Hearing Photo Silent Auction now is the time to act! The auction closes this Sunday and if you wait too long you could miss out on a great deal on some fantastic photographs.
For those of you who may not have been following along, the Walk4Hearing is a charity walk to help raise awareness and funds to support the hearing impaired community. One of our regulars, Chris Stern, has been very involved in this effort as he, himself, has been hearing impaired most of his life. He is participating in the walk this year and my friend Rob Jones and I are working with Chris to help him raise as much money as he can for a cause he is very passionate about.
We’ve been fortunate enough to have received a number of photos donated by some amazing photographers and with a very gracious donation from Mpix to provide the actual prints, you know that the winners of each of the photos will get a terrific work of art.
You have until this Sunday to place your bids so don’t wait until the last minute! Act now!
If you’re on Twitter or Facebook, please help us out by posting about this great cause and linking to the auction site to help Chris reach his goal.
If you’re not into the whole auction thing, or if you were outbid on the shot you really wanted, but you still want to help out, please visit Chris’ Walk4Hearing Donation page today!
Thank You!
Post #1,000 & The Winners of the BIG Photo Contest!

First of all, I want to thank everyone who entered the contest to help celebrate my 1,000th blog post. Without the support and encouragement from you, my readers, and especially those of you who take a more active role in my contests, projects and ongoing conversations I wouldn’t have been able to make it this far. You make it all worth it! Thank You!
Secondly, I’d like to thank all of my sponsors who have donated prizes for all of our winners! I appreciate your tremendous generosity and willingness to support my little corner of the photoblogosphere. Thank You!
It was a very difficult process judging the contest because of the large number of great shots submitted. There are some amazing photographers out there and I wish I could award more prizes!
I based my selections on the collection of images by each photographer as a group and hpw each individual shot represented its category. I don’t want you to think that if you didn’t win any of the prizes that it is any judgement about your photography. I saw great work from each and every entrant and admire the quality and vision shared by you all.
And now without further ado, the winners of the BIG Photo Contest are:

On the 4th: June 2009

Welcome to another installment of the “On the 4th” monthly photo project hosted by Jason D. Moore Photography (brought to you in part by User 40.0).
The purpose of this project is to compile a collection of images taken on the 4th of each month providing a unique perspective of the similarities and differences of our unique and varied experiences on a given day throughout the year from our scattered locations around the country and across the globe.
This month we feature shots from 3 different countries including Belgium, Spain and the USA giving us a glimpse of life “On the 4th” around our world.
View the gallery of photos taken on the 4th of June.
The project will only get more interesting and more comprehensive with more contributors. If you took a photo this past Saturday, the 4th, send it to me by the 20th for inclusion in this new and exciting project!
Thank you to all of those who have already submitted images and I hope to see even more next time!
Enjoy!
The “On the 4th” Monthly Photo Project is sponsored in part by the blog User 40.0. Please take a minute to stop over and see some of the great things they are doing over there!

New Sponsor: User 40.0
With the first posting of “On the 4th” coming up next week, I am proud to announce that the project is now sponsored in part by Marc Benton of the blog User 40.0! And I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Marc and to say how excited I am for this new partnership!
Marc is a web developer who is working to share his own education in digital photography as it happens with others who are new to the medium so that they too may learn how to be better photographers and become more adept with the growing and more complex modes of communicating in a digital age.
Community has always been a main focus of this blog and I am always excited to see other photographers that are out there to share their knowledge and experience so selflessly.
So please leave a comment of welcome to Marc and head over to User 40.0 to see what he is all about! And make sure you are here next Tuesday to see the first collection of photos to be featured as a part of the “On the 4th” monthly photo project!

February 5, 2005
I’m in a rather unsettling time in my life right now. It’s not in a negative way necessarily, I’m just in a place where many things are beginning to become clear to me that force me to reevaluate what I am involved in and what I identify myself as in a religious sense.
For my entire life I have been a part of the United Methodist Church and have served at nearly every level of its structure from a person in the pew all the way up to being a 2-time delegate to its top legislative body. However, going back even as far as Confirmation – now that I think about it – I haven’t always felt comfortable here. One of the drives behind my desire to major in religion at BU came from an inner struggle within myself to figure out what I truly believe about God and God’s movement in my life.
As I studied the various religions of the world, I found myself drawn to the beliefs of those for whom the Divine wasn’t placed in a box. I came to see God as being more than what I grew up believing “He” is. In many ways, in fact, I began to see how my identity as a United Methodist wasn’t speaking to where I was as a faithful, spiritual human being; even to the point of considering a major change…
One part of it has to do specifically with the UMC. As a first-hand participant at General Conference – particularly with the most recent one – I saw the direction the denomination has taken to be one with which I don’t really agree. Though there are many areas in which I feel it has made a real difference, there are many where I feel it has been destructive and divisive. The most apparent is the area of homosexuality. Now, I’m straight but I have very strong feelings about inclusiveness. The inability of the general church to compromise, find common ground, or be willing to work together on this in the first place has been painful. There is a strong sense for me that the denomination (as evidenced in the decisions made at GC) is unable to admit that there is division within the church. Because of that, in conjunction with the hypocracy found in claiming to have “open hearts, open minds, open doors” while not truly being all that open, the denomination loses credibility with me and leaves me feeling like I can no longer be a part of it.
At a more fundamental and thus more important level is my faith itself. For most of my life I have been told, more or less, what I should believe when I consider myself to be a Christian. Liberal, conservative it didn’t matter so much when it got down to what you believed in. Though, in some ways I’ve always felt it, over the past few years I have grown more and more aware that I probably don’t fit in to the category of “Christian” – in a more traditional sense – anymore…
Throughout my life I have had the thought in the back of my mind that Jesus wasn’t God. Everything I was taught, everything those around me were saying told me that Jesus was God come to earth and that was that. However, deep down I felt differently. For me, Jesus was more of a prophet who was in tune with his sense of God’s will and he did what he could to promote the ideas of love, justice, and community to all who would listen. So, I feel myself to be less of a Trinitarian and more of a Unitarian in my theology. With my studies and my more liberal pluralist views of religion as a whole, I feel more and more that I should be a Unitarian Universalist rather than a United Methodist. And in many ways that’s a hard realization to make.
It’s always hard to make such realizations, especially when it has to do with something which has been such a large part of my life. I have made committments, I have responsibilities, I have a history within the UMC that is difficult to let go of. As I’ve moved around, as I’ve searched for acceptance, it was in the church where I have always been able to find a sense of belonging. And it’s hard to imagine turning away from that.
I’m not sure what I will do. I have committed myself to take time out of everyday for the next couple of months to consider everything surrounding this part of my life and to decide what’s best for myself. We’ll see what happens…
