New Online Magazine: Creative Studio (CAFE)
I was looking through my latest email CAFE Cup news from PhotoshopCAFE and noticed that Colin just launched the first issue of his new online magazine, Creative Studio (CAFE).
For this inaugural issue, Colin has assembled an awesome group of experts to talk about what’s new in CS4. It’s more than just a listing of new features, they go in-depth to really show how some of the newest features work and how they will help you improve your workflow.
In other news, I was reading Scott’s post the other day about AllTop.com and how they are now letting you create your own page of RSS feeds. Scott links us to his page to see the blogs that he checks up on every day and I was pleasantly surprised to see that I am on his list! Very cool!
And speaking of Scott, I was reading the blog of my buddy Rob Jones of Towner Jones Photography and he recently posted about the judges for the “On Assignment” contest. I was asked to be on the panel of judges but when I saw that the other members were Scott and Photowalker Extraordinaire Jeff Revell, I was humbled.
I never want to sell myself short but I am always amazed when movers and shakers in the digital photography community take notice of what I’m doing here in my little corner of the web or when others count me among those same individuals whom I hold in such high esteem.
So, thank you Scott! And thank you Rob! for such honors.

Post #950! And the BIG Photo Contest!
I like to celebrate even the small milestones in life. And so it is today with my 950th blog post. I never want to forget all of the readers out there and those who have taken the time to comment and contribute to the life of the blog over the years. And a very special thank you to everyone who has been such a huge support by linking back, talking me up, sponsoring, guest posting, participating in projects, and just being great Friends-of-the-Blog. It really means a lot and you all have helped make this little corner of the web what it is, whatever role you play.
Thank You!
950 is a nice round number, and certainly a laudable goal in its own right, but it means that the next big milestone is a really big one. One that can’t be passed by with a casual mention on a single day. So, it’s not going to be…

I am excited to announce today that between now and July 31st I am putting out a call for entries into my Biggest Photo Contest yet!
Here’s how it’s going to work:
- Collect 5 of your own images that depict each of the following (in any order):
- Aged, Worn, or Old
- Travel or a Journey
- Part of a Whole
- Geometric
- Your Best/Favorite Shot Ever - These can be new images or photos from your archives, but they have to be YOURS (with the Worldwide Photowalk coming up you should be able to gather some really great images.)
- Images can be processed or otherwise manipulated as much or as little as you deem necessary.
- Submit your images by July 31st to The BIG Photo Contest Flickr Group with a note in the title or description about which category each image falls into.
- This is an open contest. Anyone can enter.
- The images will be judged as a group based on:
- Overall Artistry
- Originality
- Composition
- How well each image fits the categories - The winner will be announced in Post #1,000 which is scheduled to appear in early-mid August.
- The prize package is still in the works, but I can assure you that it will be bigger than any prize we’ve given away to date in any of our contests. Come back regularly for updates!
- That’s it!
The race to #1,000 is on! Good Luck!
NOTE: If you would like to donate or sponsor a prize for The BIG Photo Contest, please email me at sponsors@jasondmoore.com TODAY!
UPDATE: Our prize package is growing and now includes prizes from our official sponsors:

Good News. Bad News.
I’m going to start with the bad news so I can get it off my chest and move on to much happier things.
Recently, I saw on the NAPP member site that a new 20% off discount was available for any single purchase through the Adobe.com store until March 2nd. With that, on top of Adobe’s introductory pricing on CS4 ending at the end of February (which has since been extended), I decided that I couldn’t wait to upgrade anymore.
I was talking with my friend and co-worker, Eric, about it and offered to use my discount to help him upgrade to CS4 Design Premium when I placed my order to upgrade to InDesign CS4 and Photoshop CS4. So I placed the order, saving around $200 between us, and waited eagerly for it to arrive.
Two things then happened. First, I got a sinking feeling one day that I had been in the mindset of ordering the PC versions for myself that I inadvertantly ordered Eric, a Mac user, the PC version of CS4 Design Premium. Big OOPS! And then I was expecting to receive the software on Monday but FedEx decided that the correct address I put on the order was not the right one.
All got worked out, though. I called Adobe customer service and spoke with a really nice rep who helped me get the Mac version on its way to replace the one I had mistakenly ordered. To be entirely honest, it was one of the best customer service calls I’ve ever had. He even honored the pricing from the previous order. After driving over to FedEx to pick up the undelievered package and talking to a manager to work out the address issue – since the driver wasn’t back yet – the software finally arrived the next morning.
Then the fun started… I found out, the hard way, that as it turns out it is against Adobe’s upgrade policy to allow customers who own a full version of a program that is part of a bundle to upgrade to a stand-alone version of the same software. Meaning, even though I own CS3 Design Premium, which includes InDesign CS3, I can not upgrade to InDesign CS4. I would either have to upgrade to CS4 Design Premium – which I don’t need – or purchase the full version of InDesign CS4 – which isn’t going to happen either. So I have to send it back.
The up-side is that I can keep the upgrade to Photoshop CS4 since I have copies of Photoshop going back as far as version 6. It’s the more important program for me to have anyway.
I’m not all worked up about it but it really frustrates me that even though I own a full version of InDesign CS3 – albeit as part of a bundle – I am ineligible to upgrade a single product. It was not very clear on the Adobe site and, in the end, they are crediting my card so they’re losing out on the sale. It won’t affect whether or not I will buy from them again, obviously, but I appeal to Adobe to revisit their upgrade policy so it would make more sense and do a better job of serving the customers.
Thus endeth the rant.
On to the good news! Kim and I have been wanting to escape apartment living for a while now and after some searching we are elated to share that we have found a house! Not just “a” house, but an amazing house!
We’re doing the mortgage paperwork today and we hope to close in the next month and a half or so – give or take. We’re going to be doing another walkthrough on Sunday afternoon so we’ll be able to take some shots of the inside too. It’s in Johnson City, NY, which is only about 15 minutes from where we live now in Endicott, NY. It’s about 25 minutes to Kim’s school and roughly 10 minutes to work for me.
It’s cute on the outside and down-right beautiful inside. We’re so excited about it and we’re still pinching ourselves because it’s all finally happening!
Geographic Composition #48: Contrasts

I just got a new toy to play with tool for my craft and thought I would give it a spin to see what I could do with it.
I just downloaded the trial version of Adobe InDesign CS4 - which I then purchased along with Photoshop CS4, set to arrive next week – and one of my main reasons for upgrading was the cool page curl effects that I can do with the new export to SWF option.
So, instead of the usual presentation for Geographic Composition, I thought I would offer up a first pass at a new version using this new technology.
Take a look at the new and improved – but still a work in progress – Geographic Composition #48: Contrasts!

P&P Weekly: #97

Welcome to the 97th edition of The Photoshop & Photography Blogroll’s P&P Weekly!
After splitting up last week’s P&P Weekly into two groups I think that from here on out I will do likewise. Each part was more manageable on its own than going through the whole list each week. So what I’m going to do is go through A-J this week and then next week hit L-W and then alternate between the two groups with each new edition. That means, any given member blog will be featured every other week. I think this makes the most sense with the amount of time it takes to put The Weekly together. I am open to other suggestions if you have them. But for now, I’m going to give this idea a go and see how it turns out.
I’ve also done a little bit of housekeeping with The Blogroll. Members who have been inactive for at least 2 months have been taken down temporarily until I see that they are posting again, at which time they will be back on the list. If you notice you are not on the list and have been posting regularly, let me know. I may have made an error and will correct it as soon as I can.
The Geographic Composition photo project is now open to anyone who would like to contribute. Our upcoming themes – and their posring dates – are:
- Week #40 – October 31: “Autumn”
- Week #41 – November 14: “Old Numbers”

P&P Weekly: #96 – Part One

Welcome to week #96 of The Photoshop & Photography Blogroll’s P&P Weekly!
This edition of the P&P Weekly will be split into a couple of groups (A-J and L-W) as I am still recovering from a full weekend of photowalking and a portrait session. Weekends are never long enough to fit everything in, are they?! I’ll have part two set for either tomorrow or Wednesday.
We had a great time over the weekend at Salt Spring State Park for our most recent photowalk! Everyone had a great time and from the chimping going on, everyone got some really nice shots! Personally, I felt more confident about my shots than I have in awhile and was pleased with the results of a few new techniques that I tried on the walk. I haven’t made it through all of my shots yet, but below is one of my favorites of the day, so far:
We will keep an eye on schedules and weather but we are definitely going to be planning more walks in the future. We might even brave the cold and try for a winter walk later in the year. Keep up-to-date on our photowalk page above and here on the main pages of the blog for all the details.
