Another Look at a 2009 Favorite

7 Years & Counting!

That’s right. I am now into my 8th year of writing online. Last Saturday marked my 7th anniversary of what started out as a simple way of sharing an amazing semester abroad with my family and friends and has since become the Photoshop & Photography Blog Community that we have today!

It’s been a labor of love, especially over the past 3 years or so that I’ve been focusing almost solely on digital imagery, and I’ve been blessed to develop some great friendships along the way. One such friendship, which I mentioned a few weeks back, has been with Rob Jones of Towner Jones Photography. Rob and I share a similar philosophy for our work and I am always inspired and encouraged when I meet other like-minded Photoshop & Photography enthusiasts. In case you missed that post, the guiding principle for me is something along the lines of “pay it forward.” When I learn new things about Photoshop, I love to pass it along. If I see something and wonder how it was done, I am driven to figure it out both for the challenge of it and so I can then show others what I’ve learned.

I’ve been fortunate enough to develop relationships with some notable figures in the larger digital imaging community and have been blessed to receive some notariety myself. It is all a bit surreal for me because I see myself more as a just a guy who loves photography and needs an outlet for it. If my only readers were my mom and a couple of friends – like it was back in the day – I’d be happy, so I keep having to pinch myself that I get to do this everyday and share my thoughts and work with so many of you. (If only I were able to do it full-time!)

Because I never want to let any attention because of the blog go to my head, I do my best to share the spotlight (for lack of a better term) with my readers through projects and contests and other regular series so that others have some opportunities to reach a wider audience just as I’ve had over the last few years. Again, always trying to pay it forward and build community rather than toot my own horn.

There have been a lot of changes since I first began this endeavor, especially in the last year, and there will be more to come. Some of my series have fizzled out – due to lack of traction, time/development constraints, or they were just bad ideas – and others have risen higher than I had ever thought they would. Instead of taking a more nostalgic tack, which would be very tempting and easy to do, I thought that this milestone would serve as an excellent opportunity to look forward so we might do some brainstorming together to see where we might go from here.

First off, I want to lay out a few goals that I’d like to work towards with the blog, in no particular order:

  • I’d like to continue to build this site as a place where creative people can share their work, inspire each other, and find unique opportunities to participate in creative projects.
  • I’d like this site to be a resource where others can come for help and feedback so they can grow as image makers.
  • I’d like this site to be an outlet for my own work with an openness for comments and critiques so I, too, can continue to develop my craft.
  • I’d like to have an ongoing dialogue with my readers (through the comments or otherwise)  not only so I can have a clearer sense of who they are, what they do, and why they come back, but more so we can all learn from each other and push each other to be better.
  • And, if I’m being totally open and honest here, I’d like to see the blog grow in terms of being a source of income so that I can move closer to my dream of doing photography and Photoshop training full-time so that my passion might become my profession.

Next comes the more tricky part: How? Here is where I would like to solicit your input and ideas for how to turn the goals into realities. Maybe there’s something you’d like to see by way of a project/series/contest or other program here on the site. Maybe you have ideas about how to improve on what’s been started already. Here’s a few things to get the ball rolling (again, in no particular order):

  • The Points of View Photo Project has been quite successful, in my opinion, and those who participate are constantly telling me how much they enjoy the new challenge each time around. I will certainly be continuing the project as long as I have original source images to share. I’m always open to reader-submitted source images, so if you’d like to see how others might interpret one of your shots please send it in to pov@jasondmoore.com.
  • Workflow Fridays has fallen off somewhat, mainly due to how tough it’s been this summer to coordinate it. I’d like to see it continue because I think it’s a great way to get a glimpse into the process of someone else so we can pick up tips and tricks we might be able to incorporate into our own work. If you’d like to contribute, please send me an email and I’d be glad to review it for posting.
  • Photo Reviews have been a fun way for me to flex my creative muscles and share my thoughts and opinions so others might improve in their work. I’d like to see this continue as well but I just need people to send me their shots. If you’d like your photo reviewed, email me at reviews@jasondmoore.com.
  • Ask Jason is along the same lines and is off to a good start with yesterday’s post. If you have questions, send ‘em along to askjason@jasondmoore.com.
  • Photoshop Tutorial Videos have been really fun for me to do in the past and it’s been such a crazy year that I haven’t been able to get back to it. There’s a new contest over at NAPP that I’m going to talk about more down the line that will hopefully get me back into it.
  • Contests have been going quite well lately, especially with the BIG Photo Contest last month, and they are a great way to highlight some excellent photography. I’ve been approached by a few people with some really unique prizes that you will hopefully be seeing in the coming months.
  • Sponsors have been a great support for both the contests and this blog as a whole. I’ve been blessed to receive donations of prizes for the contests as well as monetary donations to help keep this blog going in one form or another. And I am so thankful for those of you who have done that! I’d like to invite all of you to consider either donating via the PayPal button in the sidebar or sponsoring the site or one of the ongoing projects. Find out more by visiting the Become a Sponsor page or by emailing me at sponsors@jasondmoore.com.
  • Jason D. Moore Prints are available for purchase through my Zenfolio Store – powered by Mpix. I am adding new shots as often as I can so you can have a fine art print and support the site at the same time. Check out the store for Jason D. Moore Prints.
  • The Jason D. Moore Photography Apparel Store has recently opened as well. You can pick up your very own shirts, mugs, stickers, tote bags and more to show your support of the blog as well as the larger community it represents. And I’m adding new items all the time. If you do buy something from the store, be sure to send me a picture of you wearing it so I can post it here.
  • Photowalks have been a tremendous source of inspiration for me as well as a great way to meet my fellow photographers. I’m planning on holding more in the future, for sure.
  • Photoshop & Photography Workshops have been something I’ve done in the past on a smaller scale and something I’ve been toying with doing again.
  • Supporting Causes is a good way to increase your visibility, yes, but more importantly it’s just the right thing to do. There are a couple of things in progress that will be announced in the coming weeks that I think you would all be able to join me in supporting.
  • Others? What are your thoughts on all of this? What else can you think of? No matter how far-fetched, off-the-wall, outlandish, mundane, basic, ambitious, or just plain good your ideas might be, I want to hear them! So please leave a comment below and let me know what you think.

I really want to make this site more than just another photoblog and I want to make sure that everyone from the hobbyist to the professional feels welcome and able to be a part of it. So please, give me your input and help this community grow!

Points of View Photo Project #10

Welcome to the tenth  edition of the “Points of View Project“!

Every other Friday I will post a new, out-of-the-camera image for you to download. You may process, manipulate, composite, experiment, or otherwise alter the photo in any way you wish. The hope is that we will get to see a number of different takes on the same image and/or see it used in unique ways as a part of a new image.

This is not a contest or competition. It’s simply a way of stretching our creative muscles and to get those juices flowing through experimentation and seeing how many different interpretations can be applied to the same starting photo.

Check out our Points of View Gallery showing this week’s source image and how it has been seen from our contributors’ different points of view. I am especially pleased with this week’s contributions. They are all great images but I must say that I have a certain appreciation for Andy Smith’s because he took a totally different tack with the project, not just processing the original, but giving it a real twist and I think it really adds something to the project.

Thank you to everyone who contributed this week!

Here’s the image for week #11:

Points of View Photo Project - Source Image #11

Click here to open the full-size version to download as your starting point. Have fun with it! I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

You can do whatever you want to the photo as long as you use the given photo in some way as part of your final image. In fact, I know the potential is there for a number of people to end up processing the image in very similar ways and getting similar results. Because of that, I’d like to encourage you to experiment and/or take things a couple of steps further to really challenge yourself to make it truly unique.

Once you have worked with the image as much as you feel it needs, simply email it back to me at pov@jasondmoore.com by Wednesday August 26th for inclusion in the project. Please be sure to include your name, location, and website/blog URL so I may properly credit you.

If you would like to send in a photo – unprocessed, straight out of the camera – for us to use as our starting image for a future week, please send me an email to the same address listed above.

I’d like to note that the image(s) that will be used in a given week are only offered for use within the confines of the “Points of View Project“. I am not releasing any rights for use beyond creating your submission. I would also express the same for any starting images that may be provided by other participants. Feel free to re-post your version of the image on your site to share your participation in the project. I just ask for a link back here when you do.

Towner Jones Photography, LLCThe Points of View Photo Project is sponsored by Towner Jones Photography, LLC. Please take a few moments and head over to see some of the great things Rob is doing! An Unusual Street Address

An Unusual Address

I was looking through my shots from the Worldwide Photowalk in Cazenovia and came across this shot of a doorway on Albany St. that really caught my eye.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen an actual address like this and thought it was interesting enough to snap a few. I know it’s not much but I thought the simplicity of it makes it work as a black and white. I also think that it captures a little bit of what I appreciate most from taking the time to intentionally be out there shooting and that is the small, and often unnoticed details of the world around us.

So next time you’re out shooting, or even just trying to make it through the day, take a moment and try to look at something you’ve never really paid much attention to before. You never know what you might find!

As promised, here is the source image for the Points of View photo project for next Friday, the 31st. Click on the link to download the full-size version to process.

This image was taken on Satuday during the Cazenovia Photowalk as part of Scott Kelby’s 2nd Annual Worldwide Photowalk. We had a great group turn out for the walk and I’m sure some great images were made by our participants. I’m really looking forward to seeing what everyone came up with!

As always, when you download this photo for the project, you can process, manipulate, or otherwise alter it in any way you wish. Just send your final image to me at pov@jasondmoore.com by Wednesday the 29th so I can include it in the gallery.

Good luck with it and I’m looking forward to seeing your interpretations!

Photowalk This Saturday

In case you haven’t heard, this Saturday is the day for Scott Kelby’s 2nd Annual Worldwide Photowalk!

As of today there are 915 walks scheduled with over 24,000 walkers and counting! We have 18 so far for our Cazenovia Photowalk as part of this worldwide event, a good-sized group, with room for more! And the weather is looking good up in our part of the country for Saturday.

Wherever you happen to be, if you are free, signup for a walk near you before they fill up, many are already to capacity. If you’re in Upstate NY, and haven’t signed up for a walk already, head on over to our photowalk page and join us for the Cazenovia photowalk.

Just some abstract architecture from Tremont Street in Boston taken during my mini photowalk back in mid-June. I liked the columns and combination of angular and curved lines throughout from this perspective.

Home Stretch for Photo Contests

Jason D. Moore Photography - 1000th Post BIG Photo Contest

We’re coming up on the home stretch for two Photo Contests ending this month. First, the July Photo Contest is well under way with a pretty awesome prize in the form of a 16″x24″ gallery wrap, generously donated by our friends over at Mpix – a $100 value! Thanks guys!

Next, and even more exciting, is the BIG Photo Contest, now in its final weeks. Celebrating my upcoming 1,000th post you are invited to submit a collection of 5 photos, each fitting into one of five categories, to be judged as a series for a chance at over $1,000 in prizes from our sponsors.

Both of these photography contests are timed quite nicely to end after you have a chance to participate in the Worldwide Photowalk on the 18th. That way you will be able to really get out there and shoot before submitting your images for either or both of the contests. Full details can be found on our photo contest page.

And, while I’m at it, speaking of the photowalk there is still room in the Cazenovia Photowalk that I will be leading. So, if you are in Upstate NY and have yet to sign up, please join us for a fun afternoon of photography.

Good Luck!

Boston Photowalk Images

Boston PhotowalkLast week while I was in Boston for the Internet Retailer Conference, I had the pleasure of meeting up with fellow photographer and regular reader Chris Stern to go on a photowalk around the Boston Common area along Tremont Street from the Ritz to the Old City Hall and back.

When I was in school at Boston University back in the day (“which was a Wednesday, by the way…”) I wandered these streets time and time again, but it wasn’t until I was out of college that I really got into photography and this was my first opportunity to get out and about in the city with my camera.

I took about 250 shots – which includes my usual 3-4 captures per subject/angle – and there is still a lot to get through. However, there have been a couple of standouts in the batch I’ve processed so far. View a small gallery of some of my shots from the day.

This Past Week

My apologies for not being able to keep up this past week. I was exptremely busy in Boston with the Internet Retailer Conference and was pretty much out of commission the rest of the time. I was, however, lucky enough to be feeling pretty decent on Wednesday night when Chris Stern and I were able to meet up, along with my coworker Michael, to do some shooting around the Tremont Street area for a couple of hours.

I haven’t had a chance to process anything yet but I hope to this weekend. If you want to see a growing number of shots that Chris took, check out his Flickr page. Some really nice shots in there. I’ve really enjoyed Chris’ work lately and I’m really glad we had a chance to finally meet in person.

Until next week…

Boston Photowalk Tonight

Sorry for the lack of posting this week. Not only have I been consumed by this conference but I’ve been under the weather all week. But fear not, I’m on the mend and our impromptu Boston Photowalk is still on for tonight!

It’s not a formal photowalk by any means. It’s just a chance for anyone who wants to get out shooting in the city to get together and have a good time.

We’ll be meeting at the front entrance to the Hyatt Regency Downtown Boston at 6:30pm tonight and go from there. It’s only a block off of the Tremont Street side of Boston Common.

So charge those batteries, format those cards and come on over and walk with us!

In Boston

I’m now in Boston for the Internet Retailer Conference. Blogging might be a little light but I’ll do my best.

I’m here all week. Anyone up for a photowalk on Wednesday evening? We’re meeting at the Hyatt Regency Downtown – near Boston Common – at 6:30pm. Hope to see you there!

Remember to submit your photos now for both the June photo contest and the BIG Photo Contest

Headed to Boston

This Sunday I’ll be headed out to Boston for 4 days at the Internet Retailer Conference with some of my coworkers to learn more about marketing, SEO, and internet technologies.

We’re meeting this week to talk details of the trip and I’m sure the agenda and our plans as a group will be a topic of conversation but I am hoping to find some time to get out and shoot when I’m not in session or otherwise tied up with my colleagues.

If any of you are in the Boston area, or will be, between Monday and Thursday, let me know and we may be able to find some time to meetup. I’ll try to post updates to Twitter so you can know my availability throughout the week but please drop me an email to let me know if you’re interested and when might work for you.

Hope we can work something out!

Post #950! And the BIG Photo Contest!

I like to celebrate even the small milestones in life. And so it is today with my 950th blog post. I never want to forget all of the readers out there and those who have taken the time to comment and contribute to the life of the blog over the years. And a very special thank you to everyone who has been such a huge support by linking back, talking me up, sponsoring, guest posting, participating in projects, and just being great Friends-of-the-Blog. It really means a lot and you all have helped make this little corner of the web what it is, whatever role you play.

Thank You!

950 is a nice round number, and certainly a laudable goal in its own right, but it means that the next big milestone is a really big one. One that can’t be passed by with a casual mention on a single day. So, it’s not going to be…

Vote for Mike!

For those of you who might be going through some withdrawl now that American Idol is over – by the way, I think Adam was the better artist/performer but could see that Kris had the more mass appeal and marketability to the target audience of teenage girls, but I digress – our very own Photoshop & Photography Blogroll member, Mike Palmer, has been selected as a finalist in Washingtonian.com May Photo Contest - Congrats!

It is now up to the rest of us to select the winner. So head over to the contest page to cast your vote for Mike!

Want to enter a contest yourself? (Talk about a great segue, right?! Of course I just totally ruined the smoothness of it by saying that, didn’t I…) There is only a little over a week left in my May Photo Contest where you have a chance to win a FREE 1-Year Subscription to Kelby Online Training if you come out with the best photo. Enter by midnight on May 31st to be eligible!

And, just to add one more thing, in case you haven’t done so already, signup to attend – or even lead – a photowalk as part of Scott Kelby’s 2nd Annual Worldwide Photowalk this July 18th. I’m hosting the Cazenovia Photowalk as part of this amazing international photography event. As of this writing there are already 344 cities from around the world taking part. So signup and join the thousands of other photographers who will be coming together to celebrate our common passion for photography!

P&P Weekly: #117

Jason D. Moore Photography - P&P Weekly Newsletter

Welcome to the 117th edition of The Photoshop & Photography Blogroll’s P&P Weekly!

This whole week seems to be about the buzz surrounding Scott Kelby’s 2nd Annual Worldwide Photowalk. And as I was preparing for this week’s P&P Weekly, I noticed just how many of our members will be hosting a photowalk as part of this awesome event!

So I decided to dedicate this week’s edition to highlighting the photowalks being led by members of The Photoshop & Photography Blogroll or other Friends-of-the-Blog:

If you live near one of these areas and are able to attend, I highly recommend going! This will be my 4th photowalk in the past year and they are such fun events and you get to meet some amazing people while living out your passion of photography.

If I’ve forgotten anyone, or if you’re a regular reader who will be leading a walk as part of this event, please leave a comment with a link to your photowalk page so others can sign up!

Which photowalk are you attending? Let us know in the comments!

Get Your Image for the “Points of View Project”

The next installment of the “Points of View Project” is coming up at the end of this week and we’re looking for even more entries than we’ve had over the past 3 weeks!

So head on over and grab the source image for week #4 of the project and return it to me by tomorrow night to be included.

It’s a really cool exercise where different readers from all over the world get the same starting image and interpret it in anyway they wish so that we can share the many perspectives that can be achieved from a common beginning.

After you’ve done that, be sure to signup to participate in – or lead – a photowalk as part of Scott Kelby’s 2nd Annual Worldwide Photowalk. I’m hosting the Cazenovia, NY Photowalk so if you’re in or around CNY register for the Cazenovia Photowalk today!

Scott Kelby’s 2nd Annual Worldwide Photowalk!

That’s right, everyone! Friend-of-the-Blog Scott Kelby is announcing today the launch of his 2nd Annual Worldwide Photowalk which will be on Saturday July 18, 2009 in a city near you (hopefully)!

Once again, I have been asked to lead one of the walks and we’ve selected the beautiful village of Cazenovia, NY as the site of this year’s walk. It’s a beautiful little college town on the southern end of Cazenovia Lake in the heart of Central New York. For more details about the village, check out the Cazenovia website or the Cazenovia College website. I don’t have a route laid out quite yet but it’s a small enough place that once we have a starting place we will be able to cover most of the village in a couple of hours.

If you’ve never been on a photowalk or don’t know what one is, basicially, it’s a social gathering of photographers who meet at a given time and place to explore and shoot for a couple of hours. At the end we meet at a local restaurant/bar to eat, mingle, and review our captures from the day (I’m thinking of the Brae Loch Inn at this point, but I’m open to suggestions if anyone knows of another good place).

We will then upload all of our shots to the photowalk website and I will select the best photo of the day to win a copy of Scott’s new book The Digital Photography Book: Volume 3 which will then be eligible for a HUGE prize package for the best shot of the day from all the photowalks around the world – which includes the entire Creative Sute, a Wacom Tablet, 2 Tickets to Photoshop World and much more!

Last summer there were over 8,000 photowalkers in 230 cities worldwide and we’re hoping to shatter that number this year. So sign up and join the crowds of photographers that will be out shooting this July 18th!

If you’re looking for another photowalk in your area, take a look over on the Worldwide Photowalk website for the growing list of participating cities around the world. If you don’t see one near you, lead one! The process is easy and you’ll be glad you did it!

For those of you in CNY, or willing to travel here, signup for the Cazenovia photowalk and be sure to help spread the word and invite your friends, your local camera club, or anyone you run into on the street! The group size is limited to 50 people, so don’t wait to signup!

More details to come!

Quick Blog Thursday

Jason D. Moore - Ithaca Photowalk

It’s been a crazy week around here which has made it tough to keep up  with quality posts everyday. Kim has come down with strep throat just as her students’ art show is coming into full swing. I’ve been doing what I can to help out and get things finished as best I can and try to nurse her back to health.

To make up for it a tad, here is another one of my shots from the Ithaca Photowalk a few weeks ago. It’s another angle on a subject I posted an image of before (below). I’m not sure which one I like the best but I really like how the processing turned out with the color and tone and I’m turning into a fan of the rounded corners as part of the post-crop vignetting options. (Both shots processed entirely in Lightroom 2).

In the meantime, since today was when I was planning on posting the latest P&P Weekly, I’ll simply invite you to visit the Photoshop & Photography Blogroll and peruse our member sites to see some of the great things they’ve been up to lately.

Updated Ithaca Gallery

Ithaca PhotowalkI felt the need to do something creative this weekend. You know how it is, you have a list of things you have to get done and you just feel so out of it and unmotivated. Well, that was how it was for me on Sunday afternoon.

I developed some writer’s block and just didn’t know how to move forward with what I was doing – still don’t, really. I needed to give my mind a break from that way of thinking and so I went to work processing most of the remainder of my shots from our recent Ithaca Photowalk just over a week ago.

I’ve updated the Ithaca Photowalk Gallery with an additional 14 images. You’ll see all of the shots from before in there but there are also some new ones that I’m pretty happy with.

It’s an interesting process to narrow down all of your shots from an afternoon of shooting. I started out with roughly 230 captures and widdled it down to about 50 keepers and have processed about 30 to a place where I feel good about them. (All processed entirely in Lightroom 2.)

It’s not that I took 200 bad photos that day. I always take anywhere from 2-4 shots of the same composition/angle to help make sure that I get one that’s sharp. I have pretty steady hands, but not always, so I like to increase my chances of getting a keeper by snapping a couple of extra – one of the joys of digital vs. film. In reality, I took about 60 distinctly different shots, chose the best versions of the 3-4 captures of those shots, ended up tossing 10-15 that just didn’t work the way I thought they would when I took them, and processed the rest. And what I’ve ended up with is a decent collection of about 30 images of the Ithaca Commons.

What do you think?
